Matresens, kadınların annelikle birlikte ruhlarında ve bedenlerinde yaşadığı değişim ve dönüşüm sürecine verilen isimdir. Lucy Jones aynı adlı kitabında, matresens için “çoğu kadının yaşayacağı en derin değişimdir” der ve ekler “ancak anne olma süreci [toplumda] o kadar göz ardı edilmektedir ki, antropolojik terim olan matresens çoğu sözlükte yer almamaktadır.”
Anne olmadan önce hiç doğum yapan bir kadının resmini görmemiştim. Hiç hamilelikle ilgili bir şarkı duymamıştım. Anneliğin erken dönemlerinde benliğin kaybıyla ilgili bir kitap da okumamıştım. Annelerin mental durumlarını anlatan bir oyunu izlememiştim. Hiç bebek bezi değiştirmemiş, küçük çocuklarla vakit geçirmemiştim. Ve yine de tuhaf bir şekilde bunların ne gerektirdiğine dair katı bir anlayışa sahiptim….
Hamile olduğumu öğrendiğimde anneliğe karşı bakışımı sorgulamaya başladım ve düşündüklerim karşısında şok oldum: Önemsiz, entellektüel olmayan, değersiz ve sıkıcı. Evde yazılmaya değer hiçbir şey yoktu. Annelik gerçek anlamda ‘üretken’ bir iş değildi. ‘Anne’ gibi görünmek arzuladığım bir şey değildi…Bakım vermek zor değildi ya da yüksek statülü bir iş de değildi. Anneliğin kolay bir iş olacağını düşünüyordum! Hah!
Yakında bakım vermenin hayal ettiğimden çok daha zor, daha yüzleştirici, heyecan verici, yaratıcı, güzel, stresli, endişe verici, ödüllendirici, sıkıcı, dönüştürücü, canlandırıcı ve (bazen) öldürücü olduğunu ve çalışan bir toplum için sandığımızdan çok daha gerekli olduğunu öğrenecektim. Bu bilinç eksikliğinin ne kadar zararlı olduğunu ilk elden öğrendikten sonra, hamilelik, çocuk doğurma, bakım gibi görünmez işlere yönelik saygı ve destek eksikliğinin nedenlerini anlamaya mecbur olduğumu hissettim….’
Lucy Jones / Matrescence: Gebelik, Doğum ve Anneliğin Dönüşümü Üzerine
Bu sergi benim matresens sürecinde zorlandığım, düşündüğüm, şaşırdığım ve dönüştüğümü hissettiğim anları görselleştiriyor. Benim yaptığım işler arasında ilk kisisel hikayem, ama aynı zamanda bütün annelerin evrensel hikayesi. Zor bir iş olan anneliğin sanatta, hikayelerde ve filmlerde daha görünür olması ve toplum tarafından daha çok saygı ve destek alması dileğiyle…

Matrescence is the metamorphosis and change experienced in a woman’s soul and body during the process of pregnancy and motherhood. In her book of the same title, Lucy Jones states that “It is the most profound change most women will go through, yet the process of becoming a mother is so overlooked (in the society) that the anthropological term for it - matrescence - is not in most dictionaries.”
I had never seen a painting of a woman giving birth. I had never heard a song about pregnancy, I had never read a book about the loss of self in early motherhood. I had never watched a play about maternal mental illness. I had never changed a nappy or spent time with young children. And still, I had a curiously adamantine conception of what it required.
As I began to interrogate my attitude towards motherhood, I was shocked. I saw that I had perceived it as mindless and unintellectual, of low worth and of low value, dull, nothing to write home about. It wasn’t productive in the real sense. Looking ‘mumsy’ was not something I aspired to. Being a caregiver wasn’t challenging, wasn’t high status, I thought it was easy work. Ha!
I would soon learn that caregiving was much, much harder, more confronting, exciting, creative, beautiful, stressful, alarming, rewarding, tedious, transformative, enlivening and (occasionally) deadening than I imagined, and much more essential to a working society than we give credit for. I felt increasingly compelled to figure out the reasons for the continuing lack of authentic respect and support for the invisible work of pregnancy, birthing children and caregiving.

This exhibition visualises my matresence moments, which made me struggle, think, feel surprised and change. It is my first personal story among my works, yet it is the story of all mothers. I hope that the hard work of motherhood becomes more visible in art, stories and films, and that it receives the respect and support from society.
